My husband and I struggled for many years to get pregnant. We got married in October 2018 and a few months later I went off birth control. I have PCOS so I knew I was going to have issues getting pregnant. Before we got married I spoke to a fertility specialist and she recommended having fertility treatments done. It took a few years before we were able to start the process. We went to a couple different fertility clinics all trying to push IVF but being that it was so expensive we knew that wasn’t feasible for us. Once we switched to Kaiser, I talked to their fertility clinic and the doctor there was positive she can get me pregnant without IVF. I stared taking Letrozol, which is a breast cancer chemo drug, but in low doses helps with ovulation. We started the process in 2023 and went through a few cycles of their treatment. The day after Christmas 2023 I found out I was pregnant. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to tell anybody. My mom was staying with us for the weekend and my husband was at work so I told my Mom right away.
I planned to surprise for my husband when he got home and I gave him a late gift with the positive pregnancy test. We had our first appointment at six weeks for a viability scan. Unfortunately, at this time, the ultrasound tech could not detect a heartbeat and wanted us to come back in two weeks. Leading up to this point I was having some bleeding on and off for weeks, but since it was light, I didn’t worry about it so much however. After this appointment, I started bleeding a lot more. I spoke to a nurse and they told me to go to the ER. They did some tests and I still had a high level of hormones indicating that was pregnant, but they could see that I was bleeding behind the embryo. They told me to take it easy and wait till my appointment the following week. In the meantime, I continued bleeding and at one point got a very large clot that came out. When I went to the doctor’s appointment for the follow up, they could no longer find the embryo. I was completely heartbroken.
I spoke to the fertility doctor about a week later, and she said that the good that came out of it was that I knew I could get pregnant and not to give up. We increased the dosage, and my husband started taking supplements as well. We had to wait till everything cleared out before I could start my treatments again, but I started again and I didn’t give up. The day after the Fourth of July 2024. I took a pregnancy test again and it was positive. I was happy but cautious at the same time. At around six weeks we went to Florida to visit my husband‘s grandmother with his siblings and their partners, during which I had a trip and fall at a mall. I was so worried knowing that I was only six weeks long and I was around the time that I had my miscarriage the last time. We went to the ER had some tests done and they did a ultrasound. Not only was there a heartbeat there was two, I was having twins. Today those boys are now a year and a half old and I love every second of it. I’m a big believer that the soul of that first baby that I lost came back to me as one of my twins. I’m not sure which one but whichever one it is, I love them so much. I thank God every day for them. People constantly tell me how hard it must be to have twins, but all I can think of is I wouldn’t give it up for anything.
